| IT'S ABOUT TIME—AND SAFETY The underground construction industry has made major strides in one-call services and utility locating over the years. Regional toll-free one-call services and increasingly sophisticated electronic systems for locating buried utilities have minimized the danger and worry of digging in and around jobsites. Utility locating is about to get easier, thanks to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Ditch Witch organization. 811: ONE NUMBER FOR ALL In March 2005, the FCC approved the use of 811 as a national call-before-you dig telephone number to interface with the nations' one-call centers. Anyone planning to dig in the U.S. will be able to simply dial 811 and connect with their respective one-call center. The new 811 number should be fully operational in April 2007. There are currently 62 one-call centers across the country-that's 62 different toll free numbers-as well as local numbers in some centers. One-call centers depend on professional excavators and homeowners to contact the appropriate one-call center to begin the utility protection process. The implementation of 811 will help reduce the time to find which toll-free number to call, and will make it easier for all excavators to call more often. Expect to see more about the national 811 number soon. The Common Ground Alliance, a 1,200-member inter-industry group that promotes the safety of underground facilities, is in charge of promoting the 811 number nationwide. Utility companies also will be promoting 811 through traditional advertising and placement on pipeline and fiber- optic warning markers. Visit the 811 website today. |
